If you want to pass on your love of Brahms, Beethoven and Bach, why not start a piano teaching business?

Ask almost anyone, and they’ll have a story about the piano. About how they wished they’d learned when they were young.

Or how they took lessons as kids, but hated them. Or how they had an instrumental (pardon the pun) teacher who opened up the world of music to them.

If you have a genuine love of music and a desire to help others achieve their goal, teaching music can be an excellent fulfilling and low cost business.

Decisions To Make In Your Piano Teaching Business

As you make plans for your piano teaching business, you have some decisions to make.

Who to Teach? Are you interested in teaching preschoolers, older children, adults or senior citizens? People at all ages can learn piano, but teaching methods will vary depending on your student’s age and ability.

Do you have the patience to teach a squirmy four-year-old “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star?” Can you put up with the eye-rolling teenager who wants to rock out with Rachmaninoff? Do you enjoy working with adults who may like to question every theory you teach?

If you find that one age group particularly appeals (or doesn’t appeal) to you, develop your business focus, teaching strategy and marketing towards the one segment you’ll enjoy the most.

Where to Teach? Will you teach in your home, your student’s home, or somewhere else? If you are teaching music, you will need to have a quiet place with no interruptions, and, of course, a piano or a keyboard. You may also conduct music lessons at music stores.

What to Teach? While many piano teachers believe in starting with the fundamentals—scales, chords, music theory—most students just want to PLAY.

How can you combine both methods so that your students stay motivated enough to learn the foundation? Can you teach a mixture of classic and contemporary (or whatever music the students are interested in)? Can they download versions of the music they’re learning on their iPod? Can they download a CD of beautiful piano solos for inspiration?

Marketing Your Piano Business

This is by nature a local business, limited primarily by the number of hours you have available. Being a local business, word of mouth advertising is the most powerful, so start talking to people you know.

At the school bus stop, give your neighbors your business card to let them know you’re open for business.

Offer a free trial lesson to a few people to get started.

Contact your local community recreation center to offer classes. Home-schooled groups may be interested in taking classes, and may be available during daytime hours. Senior citizen centers may also be interested in providing music education.

Call music teachers at your local school or church and see if they will recommend you to students interested in learning music.

Musical instrument stores may also hire people looking for music teaching jobs.

Low cost ads in your local periodical or online through are additional ways to get your name out there.

With a little planning, you’ll strike the right chord for a successful piano teaching business.
